Infant mortality rate declines, but challenges remain

Bangalore: Infant mortality in India fell from 117 per 1000 live births in 1990 to 72 in 2007 but there are still challenges that needed to be addressed to reduce the number further, Michel Saint-Lot, Unicef Representative for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh said.


The access to drinking water has improved from 62% in 1992-93 to 88 percent in 2005-06 while in Karnataka, it has improved from 71.68% to 86.2%, he said. The attendance rate in primary schools for girls in the age group of 6-10 also increased from 61% to 81%.

State moots free education for single girl child

BANGALORE: Girls from single-child families are in for a treat. To clamp down on female foeticide, the state government has mooted a new scheme to offer free education to girls of single-child families till graduation, possibly from the next financial year.


“We are still working out the details of the scheme and we have sought the Centre’s help to launch it. Once we get the response, we’ll come out with a detailed plan,’’ primary and secondary education minister Visveshwar Hegde Kageri said.

Child rights deprivation high in India, says UNICEF

New Delhi. Each year, one million newborns die in India during the first month of birth. Almost 55 million children under-five are underweight, and more than 20 million kids of primary school age are not attending school.

The statistics put together by Unicef reveals that India, which is home to one-fifth of the world’s children, is also in the forefront when it comes to deprivation of children’s rights to life, nourishment and education.

L'Inde commémore les attentats de Bombay

L'Inde commémorait jeudi les attentats sanglants de Bombay, le 26 novembre 2008 par un défilé des forces de sécurité et des cérémonies en hommage aux 166 personnes tuées par un commando de dix hommes lourdement armés.
