Thanks to your participation through work, contributions and donations we have been able to raise CHF 25‘000 (approx. $23.000) from September 2008 to October 2009 (view details) and provide the school of Pomgaon in Maharashtra with:

A complete new sanitary building, which includes: (1) Ladies’ area: 2 toilets, 1 shower room, 1 squatting bathroom and 2 wash basins (2) Men’s area: 3 toilets, 3 shower rooms, a urinal platform and 2 wash basins (3)Teachers’ area: 1 toilet, 1 shower room and 1 wash basin. Cost INR 280‘000, i.e. approx. $6‘000

A solar plant to provide electricity, light and hot water to the bathroom building. The solar unit heats the water as well as provides light in the bathrooms. Cost INR 170‘000, i.e. approx. $3‘700.

Water supply & drainage system -The village has given for the school’s bathrooms a nice broad water connection through which now the water tank for the bathroom fills up within 30 minutes. The water pressure in the taps and in the showers is very good. Cost INR 100‘000, i.e. approx. $2‘200

Repairs of many classrooms’ roofs - Some classes had important holes in their roofs. Water dropped on the children and teachers while studying. With the monsoon season, these holes have become worse. As the bathroom building was being constructed, urgent roof repair as been done. Cost of these repairs INR 165’000, i.e. approx. $3’500.

Infant mortality rate declines, but challenges remain

Bangalore: Infant mortality in India fell from 117 per 1000 live births in 1990 to 72 in 2007 but there are still challenges that needed to be addressed to reduce the number further, Michel Saint-Lot, Unicef Representative for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh said.

The access to drinking water has improved from 62% in 1992-93 to 88 percent in 2005-06 while in Karnataka, it has improved from 71.68% to 86.2%, he said. The attendance rate in primary schools for girls in the age group of 6-10 also increased from 61% to 81%.
